Just as in the work of novelist Alejo Carpentier in which the Cathedral of Santa Monica provokes in the protagonist the sensation of encountering the origins of music, the journey proposed by this “cathedral of crystals” is like the discovery of a new musical universe - an acoustic memory with a new poetic significance that recuperates the art of profound listening.

Sonic Crystals are for sound just as mirrors, lenses, and prisms are for light. The sound of a single note on a musical instrument is composed by many frequencies (harmonic or not). When sounded through a Sonic Crystal, the different frequencies of this note are focused, diffracted, and reflected in different ways generating multiple images of the source.

But I had been present, a few days ago, at the birth of music. I could see beyond the dirge with which Aeschylus revived the Persian Emperor; beyond the rune with which the sons of Autolycus stanched the dark blood that flowed from Ulysses’ wounds; beyond the song designed to protect the Pharaoh Una against serpents’ stings in his journey to the other world. What I had seen confirmed, to be sure, was the thesis of those who argue that music had a magic origin.

Alejo Carpentier (1904-1980)
Cuban Novelist , Musicologist & Collaborator
with Igor Stravinsky, Darius Milhaud, Georges Bataille & Antonin Artaud

The project of the Sonic Crystal Room and the modification of the sound perception of space has resulted in many international publications including in the leading reference magazine on acoustics, the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, and in the prestigious online magazine Perception.

For their part, the meta-materials are today found at the forefront of research in physics, and this project is the first to incorporate these principles in an artistic production.

The Sonic Crystal Room is the materialisation of the idea of Acoustic Theatre that Edelstein has been developing since 2000.

The composer Oscar Edelstein and the physicist Manuel Eguía have been developing this project for more than a decade.
